Marcus falls in love with the beautiful Polish girl, Lygia, a hostage in the court of Emperor Nero, but she spurns his advances because he does not share her faith. When she flees into the city, he journeys into the world of the Christians to find her, unaware that the Emperor Nero is planning to persecute the Christians in order to hide his own responsibility for a destructive fire that leveled a large portion of Rome.
